NZ Health Ministry Review Says Electronic Cigarettes are Safer

New York, NY (PRWEB) December 30, 2011

Television New Zealand states that “Smokers should have more access to electronic cigarettes as a way of trying to quit smoking” in a article titled Call for greater access to e-cigarettes.

There are more than 1 billion smokers in the world today according to the World Health Organization, but this number is likely to decline in light of the fact that there are now “more than 1 million ex-smokers who sing the praises of the electronic cigarette”, says Steve Wood in his USA Today column “High-tech smokes help some kick habit, but are they safe?”.

In the “Smoking Everywhere v. FDA”, Civil Case No. 09-771 (RJL), Judge Richard Leon noted in his ruling that, in the U.S. alone, e-cigarette companies “have already sold hundreds of thousands of electronic cigarettes, yet FDA cites no evidence that those electronic cigarettes have endangered anyone.” This seemingly new invention has actually been around since 1963 when the first electric cigarette was patented in the United States by Herbert Gilbert from Pennsylvania. However the electronic cigarette was too early for its time then, and due to high manufacturing costs it did not take off as planned.

Forty years later, in 2003, the first mass produced electronic cigarettes hit store shelves in China. Their popularity quickly grew and today e-cigarettes are sold in most countries across the planet. The reason for the e-cigarettes’ success is not simple hype, but rather the promise of a healthier smoking experience and of course the positive user reviews on various forums and websites such as the E-Cigarette-Forum.

The vapor from an e-cig comes from propylene glycol and/or vegetable glycerin, to which nicotine and various fragrances are added. Lab tests have shown that electronic cigarette vapor contains tobacco specific nitrosamines in much lower concentration when compared to tobacco smoke: “The electronic cigarette is up to 1,400 times safer than the leading brand of cigarettes,” says Prof. Michael Siegel, an MD from Boston University.

It is for this reason that the New Zealand Ministry of Health has recently officially stated that it recommends electronic cigarettes as a healthier alternative to tobacco. To find out more about e-cigarettes, read the Electronic Cigarette Reviews.
